Despite being suitable for a small family, this fridge freezer is packed with loads of great features that really do go that extra mile.

Features

As the name would suggest, this fridge freezer has the classic layout with the fridge at the top and the freezer at the bottom.

When opening the fridge door, you can feel that it is a solid appliance and is built to last which is nothing less than we would expect from Bosch. The fridge offers 194 litres of capacity which is not huge but is sufficient for a couple or a small family. Inside the fridge, you will find four safety glass shelves, three of which are height adjustable. There is also a handy bottle rack which can take five bottles at any one time. There is a large salad crisper drawer at the bottom of the fridge which is comparatively huge – it would be easy to store at least six lettuces at any one time in that drawer – should you want to that is. The salad crisper is pretty cool (if you pardon the bad pun) in that it has its own temperature control which can be manually regulated to allow cold air in and out.

Looking inside the freezer, the first thing you will notice is that it is much smaller with just 94 litres on offer. The freezer compartment comes with three transparent drawers, one of which is the appropriately labelled “Big Box”. In here, you can easily store your chicken, bags of chips and ice cream because of its depth.

Usability

As previously mentioned, the Bosch Classixx is built to last and is designed to be convenient. I quite like that the fridge compartment uses auto defrost technology which prevents any ice or water build up in the cavity. Ice is a big no no for your fresh groceries.

In addition to this, the freezer, although not frost free, comes with a super freeze function which is great if your groceries have been sitting for too long in the car on the way home from the supermarket. No problem – just activate the super freeze function on the control panel (which is at the top of the fridge) and you are A for away.

Disadvantages

I am a huge fan of this fridge freezer but I guess if I had to choose something that did not quite float my boat, it would be that the temperature control panel is quite hard to reach. I am on the positive side of 5ft3in and I cannot adjust the temperature without jumping on a chair. Looking at some of the other models on the market, it would have made sense to have the temperature control in the area between the fridge and the freezer but now I am just splitting hairs.

One other point to add to my wishlist would be that the freezer be frost free – I hate nothing more than defrosting the stupid thing!

Advantages

There is so much to talk about when it comes to the Classixx KGV33NW20G as it really is ideal for a small family or couple. Features

Although the BEKO CF6004APS does not come with an LED or LCD control panel on the front of the fridge, it is nevertheless designed with the end-user in mind. For starters, the fridge offers a large storage space with a gross capacity of 222 litres (or 7.8 cubic feet) and the freezer comes with 119 litres (4.2 cubic feet).

The fridge has a built-in auto defrost function which prevents the build up of ice within the cavity. Looking inside the fridge, the first thing you will notice is that storage is pretty well laid out. There are 3 safety glass shelves and a bottle rack which can hold up to five bottles. At the bottom of the fridge are two drawers which can be used as crispers or for storing your raw meat. There is loads of storage space in the door and the built-in retaining rails prevent your milk and juice from flying out of the doors when you open the fridge – clever!

Looking inside the freezer, the freezer comprises of four clear fronted compartments and a sliding ice cube tray at the top which is handy for ice cubes and for lollies. The top compartment has a clever fold down flap which allows for grab and go access to the items on this shelf. In principle, all four of the compartments can be removed within the freezer to make room for something big – maybe a turkey at Christmas?

Usability

With an energy rating of A+, this fridge freezer is an economic yet extremely efficient appliance. Its average annual energy consumption is only 342 kWh. The Freezer-Guard technology used by Beko allows the use of the fridge freezer in temperatures that range from -15 and 38oC. This means that the CF6004APS can be placed in your garage or other unheated area while still working safely. Furthermore, the freezer has a power failure safe-storage time of 18 hours which means that your frozen produce will not melt or go off in the event of a power failure. The unit has standard measures and can be easily fit in most integrated kitchens.

Disadvantages

The BEKO CF6004APS is equipped with a single thermostat which is operated using a turn dial inside the fridge. This thermostat regulates the temperature in both the fridge and freezer sections but unfortunately does not tell you what the running temperatures of each are. This of course can make it difficult to use in unheated areas such as a garage. However, it is fine to use it in a garage to stock drinks and food that is not easily perishable.

Hint: The reversing hinges are easier to install when the fridge freezer is empty and can be laid on the floor.

Advantages

The large storage space is definitely the best feature of the BEKO CF6004APS Fridge Freezer. You will rarely run out of space for your supplies, especially fruit and vegetables thanks to the cleverly laid out storage. Nice one! You will not be wanting for space in the door as it is equipped with three condiment shelves and two larger shelves for bottles. Trust me, these shelves will literally swallow anything you can give them so don’t be afraid to buy 2L bottles of soda and milk. The fridge compartment is auto-defrost which is great as it prevents any ice-build up in the area. Another very handy feature is the fridge quick cool option which allows you to instantly cool the fridge cavity – this is very useful after a grocery shop as it will instantly bring your produce to the right temperature ensuring that it will last longer.

The freezer compartment mirrors the fridge in that it too has five tempered glass shelves and two drawers at the bottom of the compartment, although the layout is much more narrow than the fridge. The freezer offers 175 litres of storage and will easily fit a whole turkey on a shelf. Yes, the space is that generous! One great benefit is the 8 hour freezer meltdown time which keeps your food frozen in the event of power failure which is very useful. Like the fridge section, the freezer features a quick freeze option which will bring your frozen goods to the right temperature in very little time – great for ice cream that has been left out for too long.

Usability

The Beko GNEV120W Side by Side American Style fridge freezer has been built with the end-user in mind. The glass shelves can be moved around to suit the size of your produce and are constructed using high quality materials. The digital display pad on the front of the fridge displays the temperatures of both compartments and enables you to electronically control the temperatures in each. This control pad is pretty intuitive and easy to use and let’s face it, very nifty too.

Disadvantages

I am a huge fan of the Beko GNEV120W Side by Side American Style fridge freezer but if I had to be picky, I think the narrow profile of the freezer may be problematic on some occasions. For example, if you needed to store a large wide box (such as an ice-cream cake), you may battle to fit it in. I realise that this is an extreme example but to be honest, it is one of the two small problems I can think of in relation to this fridge. It is just that good. Another small problem is the fact that the freezer section does not come with a light which is a bit rubbish as Beko have thought of everything else.

Advantages

It goes without saying that one of the main advantages of the Beko GNEV120W is the huge amount of storage space available. This fridge freezer will easily take a month’s worth of groceries for a family of 5 or 6. The dual cooling technology which is incorporated into this model is great as it prevents any odours such as fish and onions transferring between the fridge and the freezer compartments. In addition to this, the GNEV120W has a built in dual cooling system which means that the temperatures in the fridge and freezer are regulated independently of each other, allowing the fridge to be slightly humid and the freezer to be, well frozen.

The Beko FS5552W is a simple no frills fridge freezer in that it does not come with gadgets such as digital temperature controls or crushed ice dispensers. Despite the lack of technical wizardry, this Beko fridge freezer is a solid contender as it spacious without being overbearing and it is reliable while still being energy efficient. For starters, this model offers a total of 209 litres of storage and boasts an A+ energy efficiency rating, making it good for you and good for the environment. It has an ambient operating temperature of 5 – 32°C and built in anti-bacterial protection in the door seal that prevents any dangerous bacteria from growing inside and under the seal. It has a 24 hour freezing capacity of 4Kg and comes with a 2 year guarantee as standard.

The auto defrost fridge section, which will always be free from ice, consists of 3 safety glass shelves and a salad crisper that is the full width of the fridge. The door also has more storage capabilities for things like eggs, butter, milk and large 2L bottles. When putting this fridge freezer through its paces, we found that size wise it was perfect for a household of 2-3 people – any more than that would be a push.

The freezer section is designed to be defrosted manually and has 3 separate drawers for food storage, each with a semi transparent front. The freezer also comes with a handy ice tray so you can always have ice cubes stored for when you need them.

Usability

The Beko FS3332W is all about ease of access as you have the option to have your new appliance constructed with the handles on either side, meaning you can choose the option that is best for your kitchen area.

The shelves and drawers in both the fridge and freezer sections do not feel plasticky and should last the life of your appliance if they are looked after.

Disadvantages

Although this fridge freezer is designed to be simple and functional, for me, not having a frost free freezer compartment is a bit of a letdown, especially because Beko went to the trouble of ensuring that that fridge section was frost free.

As previously mentioned, this model is a no frills design so if you like your appliances to go that little bit further, I would steer clear of the FS5552W.

Advantages

On the other hand, in the unfortunate event of a power cut, the temperature of your produce will be maintained for a whopping 20 hours which is always handy. Also it has been estimated that it will only cost you an average of £23.30 as the annual energy cost of running this appliance as it uses just 233kWh per year. The environment will be thanking you for that! All in all, if you are looking for a simple fridge freezer that will last you a good few years, I would recommend the Beko FS5552W as a good buy.

When your fridge freezer has come to the end of its life, it is important to make sure that you dispose of it responsibly as these appliances contain a variety of harmful chemicals and gases that can be dangerous to people and animals.

Does the law say that I need to dispose of my fridge responsibly?

Proper fridge disposal is reinforced by the law and in fact there are three pieces of legislation that cover correct fridge disposal:

Recycling and recovery – The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations (the WEEE Regulations) place a formal obligation on manufacturers, retailers, local authorities and waste management companies to reuse, recycle and recover fridge freezer appliances wherever possible.
Removal of ODS – EC regulation 2037/2000 – All fridge freezers containing Ozone Depleting Substances (i.e. CFCs and HCFCs) must have those ODS removed prior to disposal of the unit. Fridge freezers that were made prior to 1994 contain CFCs and fridge freezers that are made post-1994 contain HCFCs so this piece of legislation will affect you in one way or another.
Duty of Care – Waste (Household Waste) Duty of Care (England & Wales) Regulations 2005 – Although this piece of legislation extends beyond just the disposal of fridge freezers, in the case of fridge freezers this legislation provides that the owners of these appliances need to take the care and responsibility to ensure that their fridge freezer is disposed of in a licensed waste facility. In addition to this, should you opt to use a third party (i.e. retailer) to dispose of your appliance, you need to ensure that they are registered with the Environment Agency and can prove it.

As you can see, there is quite a bit of law enforcement backing responsible fridge freezer disposal so it is vital to ensure that this is done correctly. Below are a few options to dispose of your old fridge freezer.

What are the best options to dispose of my fridge freezer?

If you are buying a new fridge freezer, ask the retailer from who you are buying the appliance to collect your old fridge freezer when they deliver your new one. This is by far the most convenient option and should only cost you about £20 for the service.
Take your fridge freezer to the nearest licensed waste facility or community dump and dispose of it there. This option is not the best as you run the potential risk of having chemicals leaking in your car which is extremely dangerous.
Ask your council’s local environment department to collect your old fridge freezer. Most councils offer this service although they will charge you for it. You are looking at paying £5-£30 for this service but it is by far one of the better options.

The Hotpoint 70/30 Integrated Fridge Freezer is definitely not a looker by any means but that is not the point with this model as it is designed to be integrated into your existing kitchen by having wooden doors or something similar fitted to the front. This really is ideal for people who do not want to clutter their kitchens with too many appliances of different colours. The 70/30 split means that the fridge is significantly larger than the freezer but that is okay if you tend to eat more fresh food than frozen.

Features of the Hotpoint 70/30 Integrated Fridge Freezer

Looking inside the fridge itself, the space is quite large and well thought out. The fridge offers 201L capacity which is pretty standard for integrated fridge freezers of this design. The fridge compartment is divided by glass shelves with two storage drawers at the bottom of the compartment. The shelving on the door feels very solid and very well made however I have to say that the lips on the fridge shelves are quite shallow which means that your jars and bottles may come flying out if the door is opened too roughly.
As previously mentioned, the freezer compartment is comparatively smaller because of the 70/30 split. With 61L of capacity, the freezer shelves are big enough to fit pizza boxes and bags of chips. The freezer also comes with built in ice trays which you will either love or hate. Some people find these quite gimmicky because they are susceptible to flying off the drawers when they are pulled open but equally they are easy to access when opening the freezer. I personally am not a fan.

Usability

Although a very well thought out fridge freezer, the lack of dairy compartment in the fridge section is not great if you are a cheese lover as the smells will easily penetrate the rest of the fridge.
The extras such as the storage box and the egg tray are a nice touch and both feel very well made like the rest of the appliance.
Interestingly and rather oddly, the temperature control panel is located between the fridge and freezer compartments and is only accessible if you have both open at the same time. The up side of this is that the panel is very easy to access but still, it is a rather strange place to put it.

Disadvantages

This fridge freezer is certainly not built with a techy in mind. It is very basic in that it will chill your food but there are no digital panels to make this happen for you. If you are a gadget person in any way, I can assure you that this is not the model that you are after.
